The return of trekking in Kashmir

A high altitude meadow in the Kashmir Valley

Jammu and Kashmir, especially the Kashmir Valley, remains one of India’s premier tourist destinations but has been off limit to tourists for years because of security reasons and political unrest.

But just this past summer, Rimo Expeditions after more than 15 years, once again conducted a trek in the Pahalgam-Lidderwat area, a hopeful sign that makes us cautiously optimistic that this stunningly beautiful region is beginning to show signs of normalcy.

A chance to go rafting down the Brahmaputra in the land of the rising sun

The Siang as the upper Brahmaputra is known in Arunachal Pradesh

It’s hard to raft and kayak the upper Brahmaputra River as we plan to in early December, some of the world’s best whitewater, without thinking of an early Sikkimese explorer and British spy named Khintup who tried valiantly to trace the river from its Tibetan source into India.

After a successful expedition to Mount Everest, a letter that would make anybody proud

A letter to Rimo Expeditions from Group Captain Prashant Joshi of the Indian Air Force

We get regular testimonials from our clients and we are grateful for each one.

But only once in a while do we get a testimonial like the one from Group Captain Prashant Joshi, director of adventure for the Indian Air Force, after Rimo Expeditions successfully organized the first successful ascent of Mount Everest, by female IAF officers, against great odds.

For various reasons, the pre-monsoon expedition earlier this year was delayed, and when permission was finally granted to go ahead, Rimo Expeditions, primarily co-owner Chewang Motup, was able to organize the expedition on three days’ notice!

We overcome challenges every day, but only once in a while do we overcome a challenge that is of Everest proportions! Of the 14 members, seven reached the summit including three women.

Thank you for the letter reproduced here. It was our pleasure.

Winter trekking on the frozen (Chadar) Zanskar River in Ladakh. Chadar means veil of ice.

A group of trekkers on the frozen Zanskar River in Ladakh

The October 2011 edition of the Lonely Planet magazine (India) has a 16 page spread about the Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar River in Ladakh.

Rimo organized the always popular trek, one of the highlights of our winter season. The article mentions our guide Thinles Dorjay. This trek lasts between 14 to 20 days and those who do it are rewarded with an experience, not soon forgotten. The frozen river, on which the trek occurs, is also a roadway for local Ladakhis from Zanskar – the interior, who travel the route at least twice during the winter season, with their locally made sleighs to Leh, to replenish their supplies and rations.

Our fixed departure trek along the Zanskar River is between the 14 January 2012 to 1 February 2012, but we also organize private trips for those interested in going on their own. Details for booking the trek can be found here.

We’ve reproduced the article from the Lonely Planet Magazine here:
