The Markha Valley is one of Ladakh's most popular treks and a favourite for our clients primarily because of its proximity to Leh, the region's capital and commercial centre. Combined with a cultural sightseeing package in and around Leh, the Markha Valley trek is one of the best ways to experience everything that Ladakh has to offer and the way its people live.

The 10 day to 16 day trek includes an option to raft part of the Zanskar River starts with a drive to the road head village of Rumbak where the trek to the village of Skiu on the banks of the Markha River begins.

Like every village across Ladakh, Skiu has a monastery and surrounded by verdant fields of barley, peas and mustard - a dramatic contrast to the arid mountain landscape around it and testament to the ingenious irrigation methods used by locals.

This trek offers you a chance for both a close up view of the way the rural Ladakhi lives by visiting their homes and the countryside dotted with shepherds grazing their animals.

On this trek, we also cross several glacier streams and passes, camp in or near villages in camping grounds run by local villagers and encounter wildlife such as Blue Sheep. This is also snow leopard country, although the chances of encountering this rare and endangered species are slight.

The alpine style meadows of Nimaling where shepherds from the village of Markha head every summer provide great views of peaks such as Kangyatse and is one of the highlights of the trek.

The trek takes you gradually to the high point is the Kangmaru La (pass) from where we head to the town of Hemis for the drive back to Leh.
