Places Visited
Himachal, Kaza, Spiti, Ladakh, Delhi
Spiti is a mountainous region situated in the northernmost part of India, close to the Tibetan border. Recently opened to foreigners, the region still has many unclimbed peaks and hidden valleys. We begin in the busy hill station of Manali with lush green valleys filled with orchards and temples. We then drive across pastures higher up to Rohtang pass (3978m) before entering the arid Spiti valley. Here we spend some days visiting around monasteries and getting acclimatized before trekking through gorges and crossing Parangla (5490m) and descending to the high mountain lake of Tsomoriri in the Changtang plains - an extension of the Tibetan plateau. A fairly demanding trek across harsh terrain, this trip promises to offer a variety of landscape and architecture from thick forests to arid stunning landscape, delicately carved wooden temples to impressive monasteries perched high on cliffs to the expansive lakes set in the high plateaus with views of mountains far into Tibet.
